Questions People Ask
Over the course of the last ten years working in the midst of the culture of the poor our team has been through many battles. We have won some and lost some. But through all of our struggles we have come through with many insights that inform our present enterprises. Life, if lived well, will offer wisdom to those who persevere through the many obstacles and challenges it throws in the way. As we hand off our understanding to the next generation, our hope is that our legacy will be beauty rising from the ashes of the brutality of poverty. In that spirit we offer the most important lessons we have learned to our fellow wanderers on the roads we travel together.
Quick News...
The year is starting our in great shape. The staff has finished canvassing over 500 homes, the task involves our fourth annual census (we will soon post some of the results). Part of the visitation of the six thousand people in the village involves motivating them to keep their kids in school. This is often a difficult task, since each child is worth potentially two dollars and fifty cents a day picking beans in the local fields. Would you keep your child out of school for two dollars and fifty cents a day? This gives you a snap shot of the level of ignorance that our mentors must face each and every day. But thanks to your prayerful support our staff wins most of those struggles.
We hope to tutor and mentor over three hundred children this year. More on this as the year moves on. Feel free to ask any questions you want. We love questions. Questions inspire answers!
We have started the year off with hundreds of children seeking our love and care, supported by both their parents and the community. Last year we stumbled early in the year with the property problems. We were not able to take full advantage of the pre-season canvassing. As it was we began the year with a trickle and ended with a bunch. This year we are beginning with the bunch with which we ended the year and much much more. In other words, we are beginning the year at full capacity. Ay, yai, yai!
For a long time now we have discussed our desires to help in the fight against the deforestation of Honduras. In Linaca alone there are over 500 homes. Nearly 100% of those homes use a wood burning stove, called a fogon, to cook their food and heat water for bathing. See the video below for a demonstration of a fogon in action.
We are tackling the problem this year with the installation of over one hundred clean burning, ecologically sound ovens. Here is a primer on the problem. For more go to this month's newsletter:
Where is Linaca?
If you are wondering where Linaca, Honduras is, try this google map site for reference. Linaca is a Valley in the Paraiso district of Honduras, near the Nicaragua border, comprised of six different villages contained within a radius of fifteen kilometers.
